Somerville joined with the 14 other Boston-area communities in the Metro Mayors Coalition this week in pledging to add 185,000 new housing units to the region by 2030 to help address the ongoing regional housing crisis. Since 2010, the Boston area gained 110,000 new residents but only permitted 32,500 new units of housing. That mismatch of housing supply and demand has helped push up the price of housing in the metro Boston area.
