Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Michael ZAMPITELLA (Shoplifting, VCO Poss DW)

On 2/20/2018, while assigned to marked unit West-6, I was dispatched to XXXX on Elm Street for reports of a shoplifter still inside the store. West-5 (Officer Walter Collette) was dispatched as backup. Upon my arrival, I was met by the reporting party, Ms. XXXX. Ms. XXXX is also the store manager. She informed me that there was a man inside who had concealed items in his duffle bag. She stated several customers came up to her and informed her that he was doing this. Upon looking into the store, I saw a male make eye contact with me, get out of line, and proceed to the back of the store. I asked Ms. XXX if that was the male in question and she said yes. I walked into the store and spoke to the man, who was identified after as Mr. Michael Zampitella. At this time Officer Collette noticed a knife clipped to Mr. Zampitella’s pocket and removed it. I informed him that several people had said he concealed merchandise in his bag and wanted to speak to him about it. I asked Mr. Zampitella if he would show me an ID and he did. A query through dispatch showed that he had several warrants. I placed Mr. Zampitella under arrest (DL) and requested the prisoner transport vehicle (Unit-200). I brought the duffle bag up to Ms. XXXX and she identified several items that belonged to the store. I asked how she recognized them and she stated that she personally put them on the shelf earlier in the day. Due to the facts given Mr. Zampitella will be charged with shoplifting by concealment and violation of a city ordinance- Dangerous weapon (Knife). Mr. Zampitella was transported by Officer Haley to the station via unit 200 and booked in the usual manner by Lieutenant W. Rymill. I will be attaching photos of the knife and items stolen from the store to this report.
