Nancy Ross Aylward Leaves City of Somerville After 27 Years

Nancy, We wish you all the very best from all of us at the Somerville News Weekly!

Staffing Announcement

Dear All,

Over the last 27 years, most of you have no doubt had the pleasure of working with, being assisted by, or simply speaking with Nancy Aylward during her long tenure with the City of Somerville. Unfortunately for us, Nancy will be retiring as of July 14. Though this is a very well deserved occasion for Nancy, her absence will be felt in our office and in the daily operations of our administration.

Nancy began working for the City of Somerville in 1990, under Mayor Capuano’s administration, working within the Housing Division. During my time as an Alderman, I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Nancy on many occasions regarding constituent requests, and I was always struck at how compassionate, sincere, and customer-service oriented she was in every situation. In my experience, Nancy did everything in her power to assist constituents, whether or not the matter at hand fell under her job description. That’s exactly why, when I took office in 2004, I invited Nancy to join my team in the Mayor’s Office. Nancy graciously accepted the offer, and I will forever be grateful that she did. She is unheralded in the number of people she has helped over the last 27 years. The phrase, “Just call Nancy, she’ll get it done for you,” is a common one around this office and the City in general, and she came through every single time.

At one time or another, I am sure that most of you have experienced her generosity firsthand, whether it be advice on a project or program, her willingness to volunteer and go above and beyond in solving problems and helping constituents, or the countless times she has lent an ear to anyone in need. Nancy’s work, dedication, and support is unsurpassed and will be deeply missed.

In the coming weeks as we work to fill her position, you may still see Nancy around City Hall as she works with us through this transition. In the meantime, please join me in thanking Nancy for her many years of service to this City and our constituents. Nancy, congratulations on this milestone, and we truly wish you all the best.

-Joe
