It takes a special kind of bully to go after an organization that provides health care services primarily to lower income and younger women. Yet that’s exactly what our House of Representatives just did. I appreciate the strong feelings on both sides of the abortion argument, but Planned Parenthood receives exactly $0 from the federal government for abortions (which constitute a small portion of what Planned Parenthood does). That is due to something called the Hyde Amendment, which was first passed in 1976. Federal funding for abortion does not exist, but the House is going after Planned Parenthood despite that.
This would be like the Democrats trying to defund food banks because they didn’t like the politics of some right wing churches that operated them. We’ve got to learn to separate the things we disagree about from the things we agree on. I think most everybody is in favor of women getting cancer screenings, gynecological exams, STD screenings and access to birth control.
Fortunately this bill will fail in the Senate (and President Obama would veto it if it ever went to his desk), but why must our government pick senseless fights like this when we have so many actual problems in our country that need fixing?
