Somerville’s Hidden Truth: Why City Hall Stays Silent on Crime

By William Tauro

The City of Somerville has a dirty little secret, and it’s not just the unreported shootings or the string of crimes that seem to vanish from public view. City Hall, led by the mayor and city councilors, appears to be playing a dangerous game of smoke and mirrors. Why? To protect Somerville’s bond rating and keep property values sky-high. They want you to believe Somerville is the modern-day Mayberry RFD—a quaint, crime-free paradise. But the reality on our streets tells a different story.

Just last night, gunshots echoed through Assembly Row around 10 PM, shattering windows at CVS while shoppers were out. Did you hear about it from the city? Likely not. No press conferences, no public alerts, no transparency. The Somerville Police Department responds, but City Hall stays mum. This isn’t a one-off—reports of shootings, break-ins, and assaults are consistently swept under the rug. Why? Because acknowledging crime might spook investors, lower property values, or tarnish the city’s shiny image.

The city’s leadership seems more concerned with financial optics than with keeping residents informed and safe. They dodge press conferences because they don’t have answers—or worse, they don’t want to admit the truth. This lack of communication leaves us, the residents, in the dark about what’s really happening in our neighborhoods.

I want to hear from you, Somerville. Are you tired of the silence? Do you believe we deserve to know about the crimes happening around us? Should the city prioritize transparency over protecting its bond rating and property values? Share your thoughts below or contact me directly. It’s time we demand a city government that trusts us with the truth and works to make Somerville truly safe—not just a pretend Mayberry.
