Somerville/Medford Remembering Julia A. Faherty

Julia A. Faherty, of Medford and formerly of Somerville, passed away on November 29, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

It didn’t matter if you knew her as Julia, Jules, Ma, Auntie, or Nanny, you always knew where you stood with her. She loved hard and fiercely protected everyone around her. Most of her actions in life were for others, even when it was difficult. She had a specific style and dark sense of humor that was truly unforgettable. She worked for many years as a certified toddler teacher at The Guild of St. Agnes daycare in Gardner, MA, where she was a beloved figure to the staff and children. She had several hobbies that included crocheting, reading mystery novels, doing crossword puzzles or word searches, watching lifetime movies, and collecting Betty Boop memorabilia. Her children knew it was Sunday if all the windows were open, the whole house smelled like cleaning products, and Barry White was playing loudly on the home stereo system. She loved music. She listened to Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, and so much more. She loved the beach and would gladly sit for hours watching the young ones play. More than anything else in this world, she loved her family. Her daughters were her whole world. She loved them more than should be possible. She loved her sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews, and they all knew it. She loved her grandchildren especially. Countless sleepovers, vacations, visits, any excuse to see them and spend as much time with them as their parents would allow. It’s hard to imagine anyone leaving behind a greater legacy of love. For those of us who will miss her the most, it’s the laughter that will leave the largest void. She had a quick wit and irreverent style that would leave jaws on the floor and sides hurting. She was a true original and we’re going to miss her so much!

She was the beloved former wife of Joseph Faherty and the loving daughter of the late John and Gladys Crowley. Julia was a dear mother to Amy Faherty-Seeley and her husband Sean of Woburn, and Libby Faherty and her husband Nick Maguy of Fitchburg. She was a cherished grandmother to Brielle, Michael, and Bennett. Julia is also survived by her sister Jean Severino and her husband Bob, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings David, James and John Sleek, Patsy Coleman, and Michael Crowley. A Funeral Home Service will be held for Julia at the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville, on Tuesday afternoon, December 3rd, 2024, at 4:00pm, followed by visiting hours from 4:30 to 7:00. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
