Obituary

Mrs. Kathleen A. (Dowd) Malone, of Reading and formerly of Charlestown passed away at home on September 17, 2024. She was 85. Kathleen was one of eight children born to Hannah (Needham) and Frank Dowd. As a single mother, she was devoted to raising her family and did so while also working full time as the executive assistant to the president of Northeastern University.

Strong willed, Kathleen is also remembered for her witty and sarcastic sense of humor. She loved reading crime dramas and her gossip magazines, or her “silly papers” as she called them. She kept her mind sharp with crossword puzzles, word scrambles in the Boston Herald and Sudoko. An active member of her community at the Peter Sanborn Place where she enjoyed the company of her friends and residents. She especially enjoyed weekly shopping trips to Walmart and Market Basket. But above all Kathleen loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was the devoted mother of Barbara Jean Langenfeld and her late husband Paul of Somerville, Maureen Kibit and her husband Bill of Haverhill, Thomas Malone, II and his partner Vanessa Valentino of Wakefield. Cherished “Nan” of Amanda, Emily and Benjamin, Jacob, Lucas, Scarlett and Timothy and “other Nan” to her great grandchildren Nolan, Griffin, Marley, Fiona and one on the way. Dear sister of the late Mary, Anne, Frank, Steve, Jack, Dot and Eileen. Loving Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Calling Hours will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville on Wednesday, September 25th from 4:00PM – 7:00PM. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Burial will be held privately.
