Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line:Assembly Row And City Of Somerville Not Playing By The Rules

Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,

I spoke with you earlier today.

The main issues that I see in this situation is A. discrimination from the landlord B. The cities policy on wait list for inclusionary housing is anti disability in ADA accessible as well as the fact that this has been going on for years and nobody bothered to notice which means that ADA accessible needing people have not been getting the units they needed for years. C. the fact that the unit that I live in was approved by the city inclusionary housing, engineers, building department, zoning department, and the apartments as being ADA when in fact it is in complete violation of all ADA building codes.

What else was missed in the city during this time frame because apparently no one even looked at this building or at least my apartment and all of them signed off on behalf of it. And in fact no one is willing to step in to protect me in this situation who is a handicap vulnerable adult. The building department has gone after the owner and they have made only one concession which is repairing the front door. I am hoping the building department does continue to go after them to make them compliant. But what happens to me? The city has refused to assist me cannot read or write to find another apartment anywhere else because they don’t have the resources but they created this mess. They also took a large check from the owner of this building to do other inclusionary housing throughout the city but didn’t even look at the housing itself in this unit to verify that it would meet the needs of ADA people. Also even the sidewalk is not even ada accessible I don’t even know how in the world all this stuff was passed and nobody even didn’t think twice about it. The ISD said they will enforce this but they also said where are you gonna live while they do it and we don’t even think it’s possible for them to make it accessible . D. In addition I’m having to deal with the fact that I could end up dead due to the fact that I possibly could be being exposed to mold since they did not do what they said by giving me a copy of the mold test the landlord that is after they did it which was a requirement before I moved in. I’ve also been hospitalized for 9 plus days possibly due to exposure due to my disability that governs that . And no one in the city is enforcing this mold test matter. I was told from ISD that they would try to get a copy of it but they’re not really doing anything. E. In addition no one has legal resources anywhere in the area to help me fight the monster of me not having an adequate place to live caused by the city in the apartment complex and I cannot fight these battles on my own because I am competent of course but I cannot do to my disability deal with speaking to a judge or organizing information or being able to articulate my statements. F . Fair housing from the city is a joke because they’re not enforceable they won’t even take the complaint because there’s nothing they can do because they have no enforceability powers G. I’ve asked for meetings repeatedly from the mayor’s office and have been ignored the entire time and the ADA personnel have refused to assist in the situation, they’ve recently said that they might speak to me. This city has abandoned me and all the people that are disabled in it. The policies in regards to the wait list you will see that the city and the third party have advertised it as fully ADA as well as the floor plans . And you will see the violations in which it has created. Who is going to protect people like me ?

  1. Terrible simply terrible! Go to the news people. Help me Hank or others. Somerville tries to get away with things until their caught. Look at all the other things that happen, high school, green line and all the other issues that should have been inspected properly. Good luck!
