Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Jimmy ZHANG (Shoplifting)

On Thursday, June 24, 2021, at 8:21 A.M., Somerville Police control received a 911 call from a Home Depot Loss Prevention officer stating an Off-Duty Police officer needed assistance apprehending a shoplifter.

I responded to Home Depot and met Officer S. Costa who stated that he was approached by Loss Prevention Officer XXXX stating a male shoplifter was attempting to leave the store with merchandise through the garden exit. The male shoplifter exited the store from a different door without making any attempt to pay for the merchandise.

XXXX and Officer Costa approached the male shoplifter and attempted to identify him. The man ignored the officer’s request, took his phone out, and stated he was calling a friend. It should be noted that Officer Costa worked the midnight to 8:00 A.M., shift and was wearing a patrol uniform.

Once the man refused to stop and identify himself, Officer Costa detained him and tried to place him in handcuffs. The man refused to comply and a struggle ensued. A civilian assisted Officer Costa in placing the man in handcuffs.

Upon arrival, I identified the man using his New Hampshire license as Jummy ZHANG. I informed ZHANG that he was under arrest for shoplifting and requested the prisoner transport. ZHANG was transported to the Somerville Police headquarters by Officer Taylor and booked by Sergeant St. Hilaire.

The merchandise (total value: $86.95) was photographed and returned to the store.

Respectfully,

Officer Samir Messaoudi #312
