Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,
At 6:00AM this Sunday morning, I found this homeless man sleeping in the frigid temperatures on Broadway in Somerville.
When I first saw him he wasn’t moving, but then when I did checked and thankfully that he was alive.
I called the Somerville police station to report it. A Somerville Police officer driving by took notice and immediately stopped her cruiser and conducted a wellness check on him. With city resources limited there was not much she could do on her own but this police officer sprang into action on her own. I also ran into Vinny’s to get him a hot cup of coffee. As soon as the police officer did what she could do legally, the officer left the scene and very shortly after arrive back to the scene with a blanket, hand warmers and something for the man to eat.
This police officer needs to be recognized for her kindness and most of all her respect that she expressed to this man as a human being. I don’t know her name but I’m sure that if you put these photos out there, hopefully someone will recognize her and spread the word…I keep saying all lives matter.
We need more resources and programs to help the city’s homeless population NOW before more die on our streets! Let’s send a strong message to city hall at (617)625-6600 and demand that the mayor and our city councilors to wake up and smell the coffee and do something NOW before another homeless person dies! Call your city councilors today to wake up and to stop worrying about petty useless crap around the city and to do the right thing here that they were elected and are getting paid to do!
