Part of ongoing Somerville Ave. Utility & Streetscape Improvements Project, work zone will require detour for through traffic for approximately six months. Access to businesses will be maintained.
Due to delays with necessary, ongoing Eversource Electric work, the next phase of construction for theSomerville Ave. Utilities & StreetscapeImprovements project initially scheduled for November 2018, has been delayed until early 2019. No detour will be implemented in Union Square for this project in December.
Beginning in early 2019 (date to be determined) and continuing for approximately six months, contractors will install a stormwater box culvert, a structure that will help minimize flooding in and around the Union Square area as well as serve as stormwater storage, on Somerville Ave. between Bow St. and Washington St. Due to the size of the work zone and equipment required to do the work, and for the safety of the general public and the contractors, through vehicle traffic will not be able to access Somerville Ave. past Bow St. and continuing through the square.
Through traffic traveling eastbound on Somerville Ave. will be detoured onto Dane St. and Washington St. for the duration of this work, however vehicles will be able to access Somerville Ave. up to and including Bow St. in order to access homes and businesses in the area. Westbound traffic will be maintained, as will pedestrian and bicycle traffic in both directions. Additionally, MBTA bus routes 85 and 87 between Dane St. and Union Sq. will be impacted.
