Somerville Speakup Line:Broadway Traffic Fiasco

Dear Billy T and Somerville Speakup Line,

With the work going on now by Trum, traffic is down to one lane in each direction. I travel this route frequently and even at 8:00 am this morning, work traffic did not result in a backup. This was a perfect trial run of cutting down to 2 lanes and seeing that traffic flows really well.

Considering the project is expected to take a year, and the numbers of commuters who use this route, the cost to commuters having to reroute, extra trip time, commuting traffic spilling into residential neighborhoods, more gas costs and wear and tear on vehicles, and special police details, the cost to build a 2 lane temporary passover is more than worthwhile.

I think I may have seen 1M cost which is a bargain compared to the concessions, frustration and costs paid by each vehicular trip times 2 round trip.

  1. Although that part appears to be working the impact on that block of small businesses must be brutal. Granted 2 are mostly takeout but the others are walk in businesses. How long can they take that kind of hit?
