Somerville Kiwanis Club Bike Safety Day

By Paul Upton

The Kiwanis Club of Somerville held it’s annual Bicycle Safety Day on Saturday at the East Somerville Community School.  More than one hundred young bike riders and some adults participated in the program.  Each rider was given a new bicycle helmet that was properly fitted with the help of Somerville Police  Officer Maryanne Manfra.

After receiving their new helmets, every bicycle was safety inspected by certified technicians from Ace Wheelworks of Somerville. The riders were then put through a safe riding road course with the help of volunteers from Somerville High School.  The goal of the annual program is to promote safe bike riding by young riders and to encourage the use if proper bike helmets to prevent serious head injuries.  The program chairman was Kiwanis Past President Dave Blumsack.

  1. Kudos to Officer Manfra, retired Somerville Deputy Police Chief Paul Upton, all the other Somerville Police Officers involved, the wonderful people from Wheel Works, and all others involved in this public service to the youngsters. Well done!
