Somerville Speakup Line:Aren’t Somerville Bicyclist Supposed to Follow the Same Rules as Automobiles?

Dear Billy T Somerville Speakup Line,

Are they above the law? They are supposed to follow the rules of the road, I don’t see how making an exception for cyclists is going to benefit them other than getting a lawsuit.

  1. They are above he law. Since this whole business has changed rules need to be followed and also making them have insurance would allow for an easier way to make them pay for the accidents they cause instead of us having to sue them every time. It is annoying to have to sue them 7 years in a row for your insurance increase due to their negligence. This is not to be anti bike as not all motorists are too good at following rules either. But it has become time to put things a level playing field. The same theory could apply here to motorists. Allow them down one way streets to have less of them on main streets. And I do know first hand if s bike hits you and it is their fault you are penalized. But going down the wrong way on a street just becomes more of a hazard.which I have already encountered. And I do not need those stupid painted line and signs on the road to know I have to watch out for the well being of someone on a bike. Regardless of weather they are doing so properly or now.

  2. Yes, they are held to the same laws as a motor vehicle – as cycling activists wanted. However, look at it from this perspective, if cyclists can use side streets to reach their destination, there are less on the main roads and cyclists can maneuver away from on-coming traffic swifter than a car / truck. I, for one, support the above posted exception.
