Program Fee:
If a player is selected for a team there is a fee of $50 per Player.
This price is the best deal in grassroots basketball!!!
Each player will receive a reversible game jersey.
All players must have the registration form filled out immediately after making a team.
About “The Tradition”
The Somerville High School Basketball Staff, SHS Alumni, Somerville Recreation Department, parents, and members of the community that cared about providing a basketball program to meet the needs and desires of the diverse Somerville community established the Somerville Tradition Basketball Program in 1996. There was an apparent need in the city to create a quality program that would give boys in grades 4 thru 8, an opportunity to develop their basketball skills in a competitive, but enjoyable way.
Teams were created for each grade level for the purpose of developing the following: leadership, sportsmanship, teamwork, and basketball fundamentals. Each team in the Somerville Tradition Basketball Program competes in the Metrowest Basketball League with the primary goal of developing young males through healthy competition.
Each team member must reside in the City of Somerville to participate.
The Somerville Tradition Youth Basketball Program wants all players, parents, volunteer coaches, referees, and staff to respect the game of basketball and to carry themselves in a respectful manner at all practices and games. Sportsmanship should be carried out at its highest degree. It is the hope of the Somerville Tradition Youth Basketball Program that all players involved come out of this experience as improved citizens, not just improved basketball players.
Somerville Tradition Travel Basketball now works in partnership with the Somerville Recreation Commission. Depending on the number of players trying out for teams, there is the potential need for cuts to be made. The program will do its best to keep as many players as possible. Due to gym time restraints in the city, keeping each roster to a reasonable number is necessary. The Somerville Youth League (in town league) will be available for any player who is not selected. Our goal is to find a place for all players of all levels to play this winter.
Somerville Youth League “SYL”:
Any player that pays in full for Somerville Tradition Travel Program is granted free access to the Saturday morning Somerville Youth League program. This league is run by the Somerville Recreation Commission Staff.
Practice Times:
Each Grade Level will have a minimum of one practice during the week. Some levels practice twice a week.
Practice times may vary due to gym availability.
Game Schedules:
Team game schedules, are released by the Metrowest Travel Basketball League, during the week of Thanksgiving. Games are on Sundays, but there may be a handful of Saturday games.
