Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Edmond BRUCE (OUI Liquor)

On Friday, 03/24/17 at approximately 23:29, I Officer Brioso (East 2) along with Officer Soares (East 3) was dispatched to X Leland St, a public way within the City of Somerville for a motor vehicle crash which possibly involved an intoxicated operator. Dispatch stated that the operator of the striking vehicle was being physically held down by someone in order to prevent him from leaving the scene of the crash.

Upon arrival, I observed a male party identified as EDMOND, Bruce leaning up against a fence. I also observed another male party identified as XXXXX standing in front of EDMOND. XXXXX stated that he heard a loud crashing sound from the inside of his residence. He looked out of the window and noticed that a red SUV had crashed into his parked motor vehicle. At that time XXXXX ran outside and observed EDMOND open the driver side door of a JEEP SUV and fall onto the ground. EDMOND then got up and attempted to flee the scene. XXXXX had to physically restrain EDMOND until the police arrived. XXXXX stated that EDMOND “reeked of alcohol” and was slurring his speech.

I asked EDMOND if he had been drinking alcohol and he remained silent. Finally he stated “I don’t know what you’re talking about”. I would like to note that I could smell a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from EDMOND. In addition, his eyes were bloodshot and glossy, and he was unsteady on his feet. I asked EDMOND if he would perform field sobriety test. Once again he did not answer my question. I asked him again and he simply shook his head left to right.

Based on my training and experience I placed EDMOND under arrest for MGL c90 s24 OUI Liquor. EDMOND was transported to Somerville Police Headquarters via Unit 200 Officer Radochia, where he was booked in the usual manner by Lt. DeOliveira. EDMOND refused to perform field sobriety tests at the time of booking and also declined the breath test. EDMOND was issued uniform citation #R5381440 for the aforementioned charge.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Douglas Brioso #267
