Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Joao PAULO (Speeding, Unlicensed Operation of MV)

On June 27, 2016 at approximately 0645 in the morning I was in full uniform and operating a marked cruiser. I was doing speed enforcement on Route 16 (Alewife Brook Parkway), a public way within the City of Somerville, which is a posted 30 MPH zone. I observed a 2010 Infinity G37 color grey, traveling south on Route 16 at an estimated 48 MPH. I directed my lidar unit at the vehicle and got a reading of 47 MPH at a distance of 261.4 feet. I activated blue lights and siren stopping the vehicle on route 16, as it slowed for traffic, near High Street. I queried the vehicle through my onboard leaps system and the status came back from the Registry of Motor Vehicles as Revoked for Insurance. I approached the operator, the defendant in this matter, and requested his license and registration. The defendant stated he did not have a license so I requested a form of identification. The defendant stated he left his ID at home. I acquired his name and date of birth, Joao XXXXX, and queried it through leaps. After getting no record for the defendant I returned to the vehicle and again asked for his information. This time the defendant stated his last name was Paulo, first name Joao, with the same date of birth. I queried that information and again got no record found. With no way of proving the defendants identity or record of a drivers license I placed the defendant into custody and called for the mobile detention unit.
