Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Larceny at K-Mart

On December 30, 2015 at approximately 14:36 hours, while assigned as marked unit Alpha-1, I received a phone call on my department issued cell phone from K-Mart loss prevention associate XXXXX. XXXXX informed me that he and loss prevention associate YYYYY were observing a male, later identified as Michael Carrara, conceal items on his person. I arrived on location and notified dispatch of the call. Marked unit East-4 operated by Officer Perrone and Officer Goulart were also dispatched as back-up.

Upon arriving, I received another phone call from loss prevention associate YYYYY informing me that Carrara had concealed on his person several folding knives from the home improvement section of the store and was now in the electronics section. At this point Officers Perrone, Goulart, and I entered the store and proceeded to Carrara’s location. Carrara was located inside the store and placed into handcuffs without incident. He was escorted back to the loss prevention office where he was read his Miranda Rights. Carrara voluntarily stated that he has been in the Somerville K-Mart approximately 4 times recently and has stolen merchandise during those visits.

Numerous concealed items were removed from Carrara’s person to include 4 folding knives, 1 utility knife, 2 utility knife replacement blades, 3 electric razors, a pre-paid cell phone, headphones, and several batteries. Some items had been ripped out of packaging and some items remained in original packaging. The total value of all the merchandise is $560.43 and a full receipt detailing all items will be attached to this report.

Unit #200 operated by Officer Beckford was requested and Carrara was transported back to the Somerville Police Department where he was booked in accordance with department policy by Lt. Digregorio. He is charged with violation of M.G.L. c. 266 s30 Larceny over $250.00.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Anderson #315
