It’s time to fall back into the cozy days of this shifting season, everything turning colors, the sun setting a little earlier, even the air taking on that familiar scent of cooler days to come. Here at The Armory, we are gearing up for a month full of creativity and culture and chances to support local artisans and more — what a great way to celebrate this month of gratitude and thankfulness. We’ve got some great events coming up on our calendar this month. Here are a few of the highlights…
Drawing Games with Dan Moynihan
Monday, November 2, 6:30pm-8pm in the Cafe
Join the author-illustrator of Hiding Dinosaurs, Dan Moynihan, for this fun evening of exercises designed to help kickstart your creativity. You’ll play some games, create some characters, and take home some tools to do it all over again with whatever project you’re working on. Come ready to draw — stick figures are totally OK — and ready to let your imagination loose. This event is free, donations are welcome.
Tiny House Presentation with Tiny House Northeast
Wednesday, November 11, 7pm-9pm in the Mezzanine
Are you interested in learning if the Tiny House life is the life for you? Join Somerville Climate Action for this informational presentation about the pros and cons as well as some of the financial and practical A, B, C’s to see if this more affordable, greener lifestyle could be part of your future. There will be time to mingle after the presentation. Space is somewhat limited — please reserve your spot here. Suggested donation: $5.
Wednesday, November 18, 7:30pm-9:30pm in the Cafe
Joining us all the way from Juneau, Alaska, Marian visits New England every fall to sing her heartfelt, humorous songs that fans of Tom Lehrer, Regina Spektor, and Ani DiFranco will certainly enjoy. Tickets are $12-advance/$15-day of and are available on her website, along with samples of her music about love, loss, space, and science. It will be a show to remember!
Sunday, November 22, 12pm-1pm in the Cafe
The ladies of Mass Appeal will be making some a cappella music magic during their annual fall concert featuring a great variety of popular and holiday music. Celebrate the start of the holiday season with song — we can’t wait to see you there. The show is free, donations appreciated.
Weekends Between Thanksgiving and Christmas in the Hall
Starting right after Thanksgiving, our weekend days will be devoted to local gift markets, including Local is for Lovers, Herbstalk, the Somerville Flea, and the Winter Farmers Market. No matter which weekend you choose, you’ll be supporting neighborhood, independent artisans, farmers, and more all the while finding the most unique items possible for everyone on your holiday shopping list.
Tim Bowen and David Lusted Art Exhibits
On-going in the Cafe
The cafe is featuring the painted-on windows work of Tim Bowen (1953-2012) through November 6th and then will transition to David Lusted’s nature and landscape-themed work. An artist reception for David will be happening in the cafe on Thursday, November 12 from 7pm-10pm — it is free and open to the public.
The Education Corner
Lots happening for students of all ages at The Armory!
Expressive Explorers got started back up again on October 22nd for the kiddos ages 18-months to 5-years to get crafty and creative and will run every Thursday (except Thanksgiving) through December 17th from 9am-11am. Suggested donation: $5.
And for the big kids (aka Adults), we’ve got our monthly Skillshare series coming up on November 18th, this time in the B5 Classroom instead of the cafe. At 7pm, you’ll learn Link Stitch Book Binding with Athena Moore and at 8pm, we’ve got “Death to Powerpoint: An Introduction to Visual Thinking and Communications” with Gabriel Ellis-Ferrara. This event is FREE!
The Youth Arts Arise fall semester is in full swing but it’s not too early to start thinking about enrolling your child in the winter semester, running Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5pm January 12 thru March 23. This FREE after school program for students ages 11 to 19 is geared to fuel their creativity and confidence in the company of their peers.
The B3 Dance Studio has a wide variety of movement classes for kids and adults alike, including Zumba, pilates, yoga, dance, and even violin.
Finally, if you’re a teacher, we are booking our new classroom space for arts and crafts workshops, music lessons, rehearsals, and more! Contact email@example.com for more information about that…
