ON THIS DAY IN: 1665 – England installed a municipal government in New York, formerly the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam.

1667 – The first successful human blood transfusion was performed, in France.

1776 – Virginia’s legislature became the first to adopt a Bill of Rights.

1838 – The Iowa Territory was organized.

1839 – According to popular legend, which has since been discredited, Abner Doubleday created baseball.

1849 – The gas mask was patented by L. P. Haslett.

1898 – Philippine nationalists declared independence from Spain after 300 years.
