Somerville Kiwanis Club Bike Safety Day Distributes Bike Helmets to Children

SOMERVILLE_On Sunday, June 11th, members of the Kiwanis Club of Somerville participated in the East Somerville Main Streets, Carnival celebration.

Nine Somerville Kiwanis members assisted by another six family and friends distributed nearly 250 bicycle helmets to children at the event.   The helmets were donated by the law firm of Breakstone, White and Gluck as part of Project Kid Safe, an initiative that was begun by them in 2013.  Since the start of Project Kid Safe, they have donated more than 30,000 helmets to various organizations, including the Kiwanis Club of Somerville.

Our members not only distributed the helmets, but with some assistance from a local bicycle riding expert, the helmets were properly fitted and adjusted to many of the children.
Past President David Blumsack has been the chairman of the Bicycle Safety Day program for more than ten years and this has been one of our most successful community events each year.

Other members participating included Immediate Past President Mernaysa Rivera-Bujosa, Distinguished Past President Susan Callahan, Distinguished Past Secretary Bob Nissenbaum, President-elect Dawn Austin, members Eugene Brune, Tom Austin, Adam Portney, Steve Catizone and Steve Coughlin.  Special thanks to Jan Marie of Cyclepolitan for training our members to properly fit and adjust each helmet.  Also, thank you to the other family members who volunteered to assist this event.
