DORMITION CHURCH BLESSED AND CROSS PLACED ON NEW DOME TOWER

The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Parish located on 29 Central Street, in Somerville celebrated a milestone on Friday, May 19th when the presiding priest Fr. Anthony Tandilyan was hoisted by a crane using a metal basket and blessed the new cross and cupola. The beautiful gold cross that acomed the new tower were also hoisted by a crane and set into place above the church tower cupola.

The Parish is finalizing a magnificent renovation, which includes church iconography, a new social hall, new community entrance, new elevator and all new HVAC and electrical systems.

The crown jewel of the project is the Bell Tower, which was built according to byzantine architecture. After the dome was installed, the cross that symbolizes the resurrected Lord in the Christian faith will be blessed and placed on top of the cupola. Father Tandilyan remarked and quoted, “The pillar of Light led Moses to “The Promised Land, “The Star of Bethlehem led the magi to the “new born King”. The cross leads us into “Heavenly Kingdom*. Parish Council President Diane Karavitis said, “This renovation project secures our Orthodox faith and renews our legacy for the next 100 Years’ For over 106 years, the Dormition Church has been the spiritual home for generations of Greek Americans, several waves of Greek immigrants who sought refuge in this country and many others who have sought out the faith and heritage of the Greek Orthodox Church.
