At approximately 4:20am, on Sunday, February 5, 2023, the Medford Emergency Communications Center received a call from a party located in Medford Square for the report of a fire in the area of Mystic Avenue.
The Medford Police Department, along with the Medford Fire Department, subsequently located a working fire in a commercial building at 58 Swan Street.
A second alarm was struck a short time after arrival and mutual aid from surroundings cities arrived to help fight the fire.
A party arrived on scene and informed officers that he had knowledge that an employee had been sleeping inside the business. Firefighters located the man inside a bathroom and began lifesaving measures. He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and later succumbed to his injuries. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause of the man’s death and make a positive identification.
The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
This incident is being investigated by the Medford Police Department, Medford Fire Department, Massachusetts State Police, Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
