Free April & May Workshops @Somerville Media Center

SMC is offering a set of free digital literacy workshops geared toward audiences who want to improve their ability to navigate and participate in the digital media sphere and greater social economy.

This SMC Digital Literacy program addresses a wide spectrum of digital inclusion factors like taking full advantage of utilizing smartphones, researching the internet, learning media production, graphic design, building user friendly websites, becoming a community journalist, deepening media literacy knowledge and in general creating media savvy consumers.

April

Community Journalism 101

Date: Monday, April 8, 7:00pm – 9:00pm @SMC
Class Size: 15 students
About: These workshops are run by Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism (BINJ), in partnership with Somerville Media Center. Participants will learn how to interview people, do background research, write in basic Associated Press style, and cover a range of issues. At the end, we aim to host a network of community journalists and reporters who can work closely on BINJ and SMC content, as well as being able to access other opportunities.

How to Navigate your Smartphone

Date: Tuesday, April 9, 12noon – 2pm @SMC
Class Size: 6-8 students
About: In this two hour workshop students will learn How to Navigate Your Smartphone. Instructors will teach you simple applications that will make your life easier, introduce just a handful of the thousands of useful apps out there for you and will build your confidence with the basics of using a smartphone so you can continue to get more and more from your technology.Please bring your own device. This is in collaboration with the Somerville Public Library as part of our “Lunch & Learn Digital Literacy Series.”

Intro to Podcasting 101

Date: Thursday, April 11, 6:30pm – 8:30pm @SMC
Class Size: 5 students
About: Audio-based programming known as podcasting has exploded in recent years as a way of communicating stories. Learn how you can create podcasts in this introductory course. Taught by BFR Station Manager and podcaster Heather McCormack, this class will review the difference between podcasting and broadcasting, explore different types of content and discuss how to curate an interesting podcast. Basic use of our podcasting recording set-up will be demonstrated. This is a teaser workshop for our May PODCASTING class.

The Smart Beginners Guide: Marketing with Social Media

Date: Tuesday, April 16, 12pm – 2pm @SMC
Class Size: 8 students
About: Social media is a powerful communication tool these days. In this class, we will learn how to get started with Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. We will also address how to strategically cross-promote on social media networks and how to take advantage of free websites for graphic design making too! No existing accounts required. This is in collaboration with the Somerville Public Library as part of our “Lunch & Learn Digital Literacy Series.”

Introduction to Digital Photography

Date: Tuesday, May 14, 6:30pm – 8:00pm @VOX POP
Class Size: 8 students
About: This brief course covers basic concepts and practice of digital photography, including understanding and use of the camera, lenses, and other basic photographic equipment. The course will address aesthetic principles as they relate to composition, space, exposure, light and color. Many of these elements tie into the art of filmmaking as well. The class is taught by photography professional, Jason Corey is an award winning freelance photographer who has many years working in this industry.
