Somerville’s working on a big project to improve the city’s storm water drainage and reduce Union Square flooding, and that means two things: drainage for about two-thirds of the city will ultimately benefit, but for now we’re all going to have to adjust to a roughly 6-month detour on the Union Square end of Somerville Ave.
The detour is expected to begin Tuesday, February 19, and only affects eastbound through-traffic on Somerville Avenue. Drivers passing through Union Square will be detoured onto Dane St. and Washington St. Local traffic will be still be able to take Somerville Ave. into the Square and turn back onto Bow St. So you can still drive to and park near all your favorite businesses, shops, and restaurants on the route, and we encourage you to be #Loyal2Local and support area businesses during the disruption.
Westbound through-traffic will not be impacted, nor will bike or pedestrian traffic in either direction. However, the MBTA bus stops for the 85 and 87 routes located between Dane St. and Union Square will be closed and relocated for the duration of the project.
