Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Raulison DESOUZA (Attempted Murder)

On the evening of Wednesday, August 16, 2017, I Detective Robert M. Pasqualino was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division as Delta 6. At 9:21 hrs, I along with Sgt. Fusco, E-1 Officer Van Nostrand, And E-4 Officer Shaun Clark was dispatched to Sullivan Square Liquors 30 Broadway Somerville, MA for a report of a stabbing. Upon our arrival, we observed a white male sitting on the bench in front of 30 Broadway, bleeding from multiple wounds. The white male in question was identified as XXXXX.

I asked XXXXX what had happened and who did this to him. XXXXX stated that he did not know. When asked why someone would randomly walk up to him and stab him, XXXXX replied “He’s retarded.” By “He”, he is referring to Raulison Desouza, the individual charged with the crimes that took place this evening.

XXXXX told me that he had gotten off of the train at Sullivan Square to come to Somerville to get a bite to eat. When XXXXX was approaching the Taco Loco in his wheel chair, he said that this is the first time he was stabbed by Raulison. XXXXX stated that after being stabbed twice by an unknown object, he fled on foot to 30 Broadway for help. Once in the door way of 30 Broadway Raulison ran up from behind and stabbed XXXXX seven more times. Once inside the store XXXXX had asked the store clerk to call 911. XXXXX was subsequently transported to the Somerville Hospital to receive treatment for the wounds that he had suffered.

Video footage from 30 Broadway was reviewed in hopes that it caught the incident. The video footage shows Mr. Raulison Desouza repeatedly stab XXXXX in the door way of the store. Sgt. Fusco and I, canvassed the surrounding area looking for additional cameras that may have captured the incident. As we were returning from the Mt. Vernon Restaurant a call came over the radio for a wheel chair on fire behind 30 Broadway. Sgt. Fusco, E-1, E-4, and Myself made our way to the parking lot of 30 Broadway. As the dispatch had stated, there was in fact a wheel cheer on fire. The wheel chair in question did belong to XXXXX, it was on loan to him from the Mass General Hospital. Somerville Fire department was requested to extinguish the flames. At this point Sgt. Fusco and I went to the Taco Loco restaurant to see if they happened to have video footage of the person who had started the fire.

As Sgt. Fusco and I were leaving the Taco Loco, a male matching the description of the suspect from the video of the stabbing began to cross Broadway in our direction. Sgt. Fusco and I had our badges displayed clearly for the male, later identified as Raulison Desouza, to see. Once he had seen that we were police officers, he began confessing to the stabbing and setting the fire to the wheel chair. Raulison was placed in handcuffs, and read his rights pursuant to Miranda. Raulison was asked if he understood his rights and he replied “Yes”, at this point Officers Van Nostrand and Clarke were on scene once again to assist.

Raulison was asked why he stabbed XXXXX, and set his chair on fire? He simply stated that “I want him dead he’s an asshole.” Raulison was then asked what he used to stab XXXXX with, he replied “A screwdriver.” The screwdriver was not recovered, he claims to not remember where he had thrown it. As for the lighting of the wheel chair, Raulison used a lighter that was recovered from his right front pocket.

Raulison was transported to the Somerville Police Department via unit #200, operated by Officer J. Rivera. Once at the station Raulison was booked in the usual manner by the shift commander Lt. J. DeGregorio.

After being booked, Raulison was escorted to an audio and video recorded room located in the detective bureau. Once again he was read his right pursuant to Miranda, once I had finished reading him his constitutional rights, he invoked his rights to council. It was at his point any and all questions were stopped, and Raulison was returned to the cell. I would like to note that Raulison repeatedly admitted to the crimes on the way back to the cell. He kept saying that jail is a good place for him.

I will be entering the lighter, that was taken at the scene from Raulison and placing it in to evidence. The wheel chair that was burned will also be placed in to evidence. I will also be attaching photos of XXXXX’s wounds to this report.

Respectfully submitted,

Detective Robert M. Pasqualino #271
