This past Wednesday night, dozens of residents came out to celebrate Somerville’s 175th Birthday on Broadway.
The month of March officially marks 175 years since Somerville separated from Charlestown (in 1842).
The celebration took place at the Somerville-Charlestown city limits on East Broadway (in front of the Mount Vernon Restaurant.
Mayor Joseph Curtatone led the crowd in singing the Happy Birthday song in true Somerville style.
Following the outdoor ceremony, the crowd headed over to the Mount Vernon for some light refreshments, birthday cake, and the official launch of a special “Municipal Freedom Gives National Strength” (our City motto) gluten free beer, brewed specially by Somerville’s own Aeronaut Brewing Company.
The mayor and partygoers toasted to Somerville’s birthday with celebratory glasses of Prospect Hill Bottling Company’s Tower Root Beer, Cream Soda, and Ginger Ale. The company was founded in Somerville in 1914.
