Support the Fourth Annual Somerville Moms Diaper Drive

Somerville, September 23, 2016 – The Fourth Annual Somerville Moms Diaper Drive launched on Saturday, September 24, and runs through Sunday, October 9. All diapers will be donated to the Somerville/Cambridge WIC office, which serves Somerville, Cambridge, Arlington, Watertown, Lexington, and Belmont. There are a variety of ways to donate including dropping diapers off at one of the many businesses and organizations hosting boxes in the area or purchasing diapers from the Amazon registry and having them sent directly to the WIC office.

Many businesses and schools/daycares have agreed to host a collection box for the Drive. While there may be some additions to the list, diapers can be dropped off in Somerville at Bright Horizons in Davis and Teele Squares, Magpie Kids, Two Little Monkeys, Harvard Vanguard’s Pediatrics Department, Davis Square KinderCare, and all branches of the Somerville Library. In Arlington, donors can bring diapers to Ready Set Kids and the Fox Library. Donors in Cambridge can bring diapers to Imagine, Tree House Academy, Parents’ Nursery School, and KinderCare. Finally, the Babies R Us in Everett will also have a collection box. All diapers are accepted, even opened packages, swim diapers, and pull-ups.

Donors who can’t get out to one of the collection boxes are welcome to donate through the Amazon registry set up for the drive at at https://www.amazon.com/…/b…/5APC4MNPSASN/160-2782822-7451837 (Amazon Smile users can access the registry at: https://smile.amazon.com/registry/baby/5APC4MNPSASN). Donors can also make a monetary donation to the Drive’s PayPal account, SomervilleDiaperDrive@gmail.com, so additional diapers can be purchased when the supply runs low. Lastly, donors can ship diapers from their favorite store directly to the WIC office, c/o Carla Sodeyama, 366 Broadway, Suite 102, Somerville, MA 02145.

“This is our fourth year organizing the Somerville Diaper Drive, and last year we donated 37,644 diapers, which helped over 500 families. I’m so proud to be part of such a generous community, and we couldn’t do it without the support of local businesses, organizations, and a small army of volunteers,” says founder and co-coordinator Kerstin Sinkevicius, who recently moved from Somerville to Lincoln. This year, the Drive organizers hope to donate at least 40,000 diapers to the WIC office in Somerville.

The Annual Somerville Moms Diaper Drive began after Kerstin Sinkevicius and Aimee Mills of Somerville read an article detailing how difficult it was for financially challenged families to afford diapers. Neither WIC nor SNAP benefits cover the cost of diapers. These activist moms learned that parents were re-using dirty diapers and changing their babies less frequently to make their supply of diapers last longer, so they decided to draw on the generous community of parents that grew out of the Somerville Moms listserv, a popular parenting forum that has over 3000 members in and around Somerville. Somerville Mom and graphic designer Kristen Cox volunteered to design the website header and flyers for the Drive, and this year, Kim Jalet stepped up to replace Aimee as co-coordinator of the Drive.
