By Dave Dickerson Boys Track Coach, Somerville High School

Travis Dolcine, Marcus Thomas, Shaq Joseph, Phillips Magre, Ben Pierre, Andre James, Demar Chapman, Carls Alphonse, LeDondy Francois & Imler Ozit won medals for the SHS spring track team in three events (Sprint Medley, 800 meter relay & Triple Jump) at the MSTCA Division 1 State Relays on April 30th at lincoln-Sudbury high School. The Boys also ran qualifying times in the Sprint Medley & 800 meter relay events for the National Scholastic Championships to be held in late June.

Following a pre-season meet at Winchester, a 120-8 victory at Medford early in the season, a very successful day at the GBL Freshmen Sophomore meet and winning 5 relays at the MVC vs. GBL relays, the Boys Track team didn’t let a little rain interfere with their quest to win the Greater Boston League season championship at Malden on May 4. The team won 13 of 15 closely contested events and pulled away with a 90-41 victory to gain sole possession of first place in the GBL.

On May 7th at Oliver Ames High School in Easton, Marcus Thomas, Daniel Reis & Phillips Magre competed well in the Mass. State Freshmen/Sophomore Large School championships. Phillips Magre took the championship in 2 events- High Jump (6’2″) and 200 meters (23.08); Marcus Thomas placed 11th in the 400 meters & Freshman-Daniel Reis ran 20.58 for the 110mHH. Also competing at night at Regis College in the Weston Twilight Invitational on May 7th, Shaq Joseph placed 3rd in the Triple Jump and Ben Pierre & Carls Alphonse took home medals in the 100 meter dash. On Monday, May 9th, the team traveled to Chelsea for a ‘friendly’ meet and concluded the regular GBL season with a victory at Dilboy Field on May 11th versus Everett (112-19). Helping lead the team to their third consecutive undefeated spring season (5-0, 5-0 & 3-0) and GBL Championship were 7 graduating seniors- Travis Dolcine, Ben Pierre, Demar Chapman, Josh Gauyo, Andre James, Carlo Gerton & Reginal Joseph. The full team gets back in action on Wednesday (5/18) at Dilboy for the All-League meet.

This past weekend, our underclassmen had a good showing at the MSTCA Coaches Invitational at BC High on Saturday 5/14, while our Senior team members were given the day off after a night at the prom. Phillips Magre grabbed 3rd place in the 400m race, running with a group of the fastest athletes in the state on a beautiful weather day. Phillips 49.90 (F.A.T) is #3 all-time for a Somerville High athlete and places him at #4 in Massachusetts this season. Phillips also placed 5th in the High Jump/ 6’2″!

Shaq Joseph won a 5th place medal in the Triple Jump (41’9.5″) and Imler Ozit (39’3.25″) placed 12th. Both athletes made it to the All-State Final one year ago.

Marcus Thomas ran his best individual 400m (53.16) placing 8th of all underclassmen (including all athletes except Seniors at the meet).

LeDondy Francois leaped 18′ 6.25″ and Henry Hover followed in 18’1″ in the Long Jump before Kalin Toussaint covered 800 meters in 2:11.87

In the final event of the day, the 4 x 400 meter relay team got off to a terrific start with Henry Hover doing his job well (55.0), while keeping Somerville in the mix with 3 legs to go in the seeded heat of 8 teams. Marcus Thomas took over and looked strong surging down the backstretch ready to pass a group of runners, when he tweaked a pre-existing ankle injury that he tried hard to shake off for 50 meters before it was obvious he needed to stop with 150 meters to go.

At this point in the season the following athletes have qualified to compete in the MIAA Division 1 Eastern Massachusetts Championship meet- to be held at Dilboy Stadium on Sunday 5/29/16: Demar Chapman, Carls Alphonse, Andre James, Ben Pierre, Travis Dolcine, Marcus Thomas, Shaq Joseph, Phillips Mage, Imler Ozit, Henry Hover, & Matheus Bragatto
