Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Oscar HERNANDEZ-RIVERA (Receiving Stolen Property & Roxbury DC Warrant)Assembly Row Somerville

On Friday, February 26, 2016 at 2:00 P.M., while walking on Grand Union Blvd. along with Officer Anderson, I observed a man who was later identified as Oscar Hernandez-Rivera open the side door of a trash receptacle and place a plastic shopping bag inside the metal frame. Hernandez walked west on Grand Union Blvd and entered Express store.

Few minutes later, Hernandez exited the store, removed items of clothing from inside his jacket, placed them in a white plastic bag then put the bag inside a trash barrel located at the intersection of Grand Union Blvd and Artisan Way.

Detective Faria followed Hernandez and informed me of his whereabouts as he went from one store to another. At 2:30 P.M., Hernandez retrieved the plastic bags he initially placed inside the trash receptacles and walked east on Grand Union Blvd.

I followed Hernandez and stopped him near the Assembly Square train station. Sergeant Shackelford and Officer Omeara responded as backup. I searched Hernandez’ bag and recovered the following items:

– (11) Express Polo Shirts ($439.45)

– (5) Banana Republic shirts ($224.95)

– (3) Nike hats ($73.97)

– (1) Reebok sneakers ($59.99)

– (1) Adidas Sandals ($29.99)

I asked Hernandez if has receipts for any of the items he has in his possession and he stated “No.” A query of Mr. Hernandez name and date of birth showed he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. I placed Mr. Hernandez under arrest for the warrant and receiving stolen property over $250. Mr. Hernandez was transported to the Somerville Police Headquarters via unit 200, operated by Officer Goncalves and booked by Sergeant Kennelly.

Recovered items (total value $828.35) were returned to the stores.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Samir Messaoudi

Somerville Police Dept.
