Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Daqnya JOHNSON, Amy UBIERA & Desaray GRANT (Larceny, Conspiracy)

On Monday, January 04, 2016 at 6:40 P.M., I received a call on my department issued phone from Saks’ Loss Prevention agent, XXXXX who stated he had just observed a female conceal a pair of shoes in her bag. XXXXX provided me with a description (black female, wearing black pants, black shoes and a green coat) accompanied by two other females.

I responded to Saks along with Officer Anderson and observed three females matching the description exiting the store from the Grand Union Blvd side. They immediately ran across the street to the parking lot where Officer Anderson and I were able to stop them.

I asked all three females to take their hands out of their pockets and put their bags on the ground directly in front of them. A female identified as Daqnya Johnson was carrying a handbag that was unzipped and in plain view I observed three pairs of shoes in her bag (total value $330.91). I then looked in the handbag Ms. Amy Ubiera was carrying and observed three pairs of shoes with the price tags attached to them (total value $1355.91). The third female was identified as Desaray Grant, had a bulge in the front of her coat, I asked her to unzip her coat and observed a pair of shoes concealed under her arms (valued at $323.75).

We escorted all three females back to the Loss prevention office, where I obtained photographs of the stolen merchandise, copies of the receipts and was able to review the surveillance footage. I observed Ms. Johnson select a pair of shoes, place it on a bench then Ms. Ubiera moved closer to the bench obstructing the camera’s view. Ms. Johnson placed the shoes in her bag and Ubiera moved to a different aisle, then Ms. Grant selected a pair of shoes and passed them on to Ms. Ubiera.

I placed Johnson, Grant and Ubiera under arrest for Larceny Over $250 c.266 S30A and Conspiracy to Commit a Crime c.274 S7. They were transported to the Somerville Police Headquarters via unit 200 operated by Officer Kim and booked by Sergeant Fusco and Lieutenant DiGregorio.

All items recovered from the defendants’ bags and persons (total value $2010.57) were returned to the store.

Respectfully submitted,
