Real Life Somerville Police Stories:MOTOR VEH, RECEIVE STOLEN c266 S28

On Saturday, December 5th 2015, I Sergeant Kevin Shackelford was working as Patrol Supervisor in Somerville Marked Unit “S9.” At approximately 1:10am, I was parked at the intersection of McGrath Hwy and Pearl St. (both public ways in the City of Somerville) observing the flow of traffic when I queried the status of a grey 2015 Chrysler 200 Sedan. The registry of motor vehicle’s indicated that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Boston from Hertz Vehicle’s.

I pulled my cruiser behind the Chrysler, called Somerville Control to verify the status of the vehicle and my current location. I followed the vehicle from Pearl St. onto McGrath Hwy. heading North. When Somerville Control/Dispatch confirmed it was a stolen vehicle, the suspect vehicle and I were stopped at a red light at the intersection of McGrath Hwy and Broadway. At that time, Somerville Marked Unit East #1 Officer D’Amelio pulled his cruiser directly up to the suspect vehicle (blue lights on). When Officer D’Amelio pulled up, I activated my blue lights and approached the operator. Officer D’Amelio and I immediately had the operator later identified as, Mr. Kevin Smythwick exit the vehicle. I advised Mr. Smythwick that the vehicle had been reported stolen and placed Mr. Smythwick under arrest for receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

Mr. Smythwick was transported to the Somerville Police Station via Somerville Marked Unit 200, Officer Ramirez to be booked by, Lt. Lavey. Criminal Citation #R6630441 was issued to Mr. Smythwick.

Respectfully Submitted,

Sergeant Kevin Shackelford #239
