ON THIS DAY IN: 1485 – King Matthias of Hungary took Vienna in his conquest of Austria (from Frederick III) and made the city his capital.

1796 – Tennessee became the 16th state.

1813 – The Navy gained its motto as the mortally wounded commander of the frigate Chesapeake, Capt. James Lawrence, said, “Don’t give up the ship.”

1869 – Thomas Edison of Boston, Massachusetts, received a patent for his electric voting machine.
