Talked about the T with Joe Battenfeld yesterday. Major point here is generations of chronic underfunding put the T behind both in terms of growing to meet its demand and in replacing its dated equipment. Any fix for the MBTA that doesn’t address both those issues isn’t a fix.
A few important facts to remember: first, the Green Line extension is funded and the agreements have been signed. The federal government has kicked in $1.3 billion for the project. The GLX will be happening in parallel with whatever we do on the equipment/maintenance side of the equation. Second, purchase agreements have been signed for new Red, Orange and Green line cars. It’s going to take 5-10 years to get them all running, but there is some new equipment on the horizon.
