SPS Middle Grades Leadership Team Participates in Peer Leadership Conference
Eight students from three Somerville schools attended The Middle School Peer Leadership Conference Friday, January 16th, at Lasell College in Newton. The students, accompanied by chaperones Tara Stead and Joe Burke, included: Jacob Santiago and Elliott Rodriguez from the Argenziano School; Sara Charif, Syleen Scott and Hasta Lama from the Winter Hill School; and Roberto Blandon, Brianna Hyppolite and Ismael Pena from the Healey. These student leaders are all part of the district’s Aspirations program at their respective schools. At the conference, students participated in a number of fun educational activities designed to reinforce healthy decision-making skills, particularly those concerning maintaining a lifestyle free of drugs and alcohol. Somerville Public Schools students mixed with students from nine other communities, ranging in size from small suburban schools to large urban systems, and exchanged ideas on how to incorporate their proposals into meaningful school activities. Ultimately, this was a fun and rewarding day for our students.

Mural Project Under Way at the Healey School
It is an exciting time in the Art Room at the Healey School. A grant award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council has made it possible for Healey School students in Grades 3-8 to work with David Fichter, a well known mural artist. Students have finished drawing sketches related to the theme “Healey on the Mystic.” They will spend the month of February working with Mr. Fichter, along with Mrs. DellaCamera, putting together the glass tiles to create a beautiful, collaborative, mosaic mural for permanent display at the Healey School.
