Some opponents of Question 4, on this November’s ballot, are trying to scare
us by telling workers that they could lose their existing benefits (see recent articles in the Springfield Republican and the Lowell Sun).
Question 4 is clear—employers who currently offer equal or better benefit plans can keep those policies. But right now, almost one million workers in Massachusetts can’t take a single day of paid sick time to visit the doctor or take care of a sick child.
Question 4 would guarantee access to earned sick time for all workers in Massachusetts. At companies with 10 or fewer employees, workers would earn up to 40 hours of unpaid sick time to visit the doctor or take care of a sick family member. At companies with 11 or more employees, workers would earn up to 40 hours of paid sick time.
Hardworking people shouldn’t have to choose between the job they need and the children they love. We deserve to be able to go see a doctor or pick up a sick child from school without worrying about losing pay or being fired. That’s why I’m voting Yes On Question 4 on November 4th.
