Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line: November ballot Question to double the CPA your property taxes from 1.5% to 3%

Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,

Hey, Did you hear there’s a question on the November ballot to double the CPA your property taxes from 1.5% to 3%? Seem the Administration is trying to slide this one in.

When asking the Counsel At Large, we were told it’s up to the voters to educate themselves. When you drive through other Cities like Medford and Stoneham you see signs like Vote No on #3 but no one in Somerville knows about it.

  1. It is time for property owners & renters to unite to prevent additional taxes on top of the high taxes & fees we already pay. This will cause rents to increase along with the loss of housing stock. As we all know everytime some family bails out of Somerville as a result of UNAFFORDABILITY the property turns into a high end condo. This causes the renters in these properties to find new housing at higher costs. The city has enough money in the coffers that are not spending. When does the average middle class person get a break. New development at assembly, Union Square and coming to Davis Square with millions of taxed square footage that does not provide any relief to current property owners. STOP the CPA increase!!

    1. John, I opposed the first one and even more this one as it is an insult to us. I don’t know the number of renters versus the home owners who pay the tax but I am sure it will be the renters that will put this through. Anybody that has renters needs to add this 100% to their rent. But it does need to stop the burden on the taxpayers. We have zero elected officials working for us now.
