Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line: FINALLY! TRAFFIC OVERHANG PEDESTRIAN CAUTION SIGN INSTALLED AT CLARENDON HILL TOWERS/STOP & SHOP BUSY BROADWAY CROSSWALK!

Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,

After some fifty years without any pedestrian protection at the Clarendon Hill Towers/Stop and Shop/Broadway Crosswalk, just yards away from Route 16, the city finally was motivated to install traffic protection for its citizens.

Clarendon Hill Towers was built in 1968, 501 units, diverse population. For approximately 50 years the residents and everybody else were forced to navigate this unprotected crosswalk. For all these years thru many City Council members, etc., there were hundreds of conversa-
tions, phone calls, e-mails, newspaper articles to alert officials about the dire necessity of proper signage.
FINALLY! Last week, after 55 years!…The City of Somerville finally did its job and installed a very prominent overhang Caution Pedestrian Symbol Sign with 2 large bright lights shining 24/7 at this crosswalk situated just yards away from Rt.16. In addition, several caution signs were installed on the sidewalk. One caution sign was installed at the crosswalk near the bus terminal. Also, the overhead cameras were also installed.
Thank Goodness! We can always speculate as to why the city falls short on taking care of the obvious while spinning themselves into a frenzy to execute their fantastical, immature ideas? Well, for today, we are very relieved to finally have much needed protection at this busy crosswalk.
The tenants of Clarendon Hill Towers are especially grateful to Billy Tauro for taking care of business, i.e. publishing timely articles of concern such as last week’s Crosswalk Article by Cambridge Day.Com. Billy Tauro is not a procrastinat-
or. He sees the gravity of the issues and inspires us to work together to get results…and NOT wait for 55 years for common sense to prevail!

Sincerely,
Karen Glover
