Obituary Somerville – Mr. Joseph Saraiva, Sr., a long-time resident of Somerville passed away peacefully in his home of over 60 years at the age of 89. Born in Cambridge to Portuguese immigrants during the Great Depression, Joseph turned what could have been a life of deprivation to one of strength, hard work and love of family. His spirit of lending a helping hand to all that knew him came from his humble beginnings at an early age. Known to his friends as “Butch” in Cambridge and later as “Joe Soap” as the proprietor of Joseph Products Company, along with his growing family, his true entrepreneurial mind was never at rest.
Joseph is predeceased by his devoted wife, Lois Marilyn Saraiva (Tribou) of nearly 50 years, his parents Joseph and Mary (Pacheco) Saraiva, and beloved brother of the late
Beatrice (Saraiva) Juskiewicz and William Saraiva. Loving father of six children, Joseph Saraiva, III and his late wife Elizabeth of Somerville, Diane Mattera and her husband Vincent of Somerville, Robert Saraiva of Littleton, David Saraiva and his wife Helen of Malden, James Saraiva and his wife Melissa of Swampscott and Philip Saraiva and his wife Cynthia of East Bridgewater; by his beloved grandchildren Michael Mattera and his wife Holly, Melinda Breen and her late husband Daniel, Robert, Jr., Holly, Christopher, David, Jr., Chynna, Jared, Ryan, Casey Riley, Amanda, Philip, Jr., Ethan; and great grandchildren Christian, Bailey & Ambria Breen & Kiera Mattera. Also loving “Uncle, Jr.” of many nieces & nephews as close as his own, and many other loving extended family & friends that have become family.
Funeral from the Rogers Funeral Home, 380 Cambridge Street in Cambridge on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at 10:00 am. Funeral Mass at St. Anthony’s Church, 400 Cardinal Medeiros Ave. in Cambridge at 11:00 am. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday, April 18, 2022, from 4 to 7:00 pm. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Winchester.
