Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,

I have five minor children in the Somerville School system. Now that the schools are going with remote learning, I only have one computer never mind now needing five of them.
To top that off I do not have and Internet service to begin with other than my husband’s smartphone that we all share for an internet connection.

My husband works two jobs and I work two jobs as well and when we had to decide between having to install and pay for Internet service or put food on our table to feed our children the children won of course.

It’s hard enough as it is living in Somerville with higher rents and my husband’s car getting ticketed every other week.

The guidance counselors and principles have been very cooperative with us, but now their hands are tied with the mayor’s decision not to reopen the schools and go remotely.

Either my husband or I must now give up one of our jobs to stay home with the children and still with that said we still have no computers nor Internet, so how do we do anything at all?

It seems like the city is working against us raising our children in the city of Somerville where it is almost impossible to survive here. Many months we go without so the children can go with. We don’t have much, but we have each other. What should we do?

  1. My recommendation is to move back to Central America. If we’re not giving you and your spawn enough for free already… feel free to go home. Or illegally immigrate to somewhere else.
NO SYMPATHY. I’m 56. I wanted kids. I’ve been married twice, but wanted to have a very stable life before assuming that responsibility – apparently – you were’t.
    NOT MY PROBLEM.

  2. There is turmoil and your children’s future along with your daily life is at the hands of an egotistical emporer who just wants to be better than every other politician posturing for a new job. His time is running out the Socialist friends so he thinks are ready to take him out in 2021.

The carnage our children in general but more specific kids with disabilities, english as a second language students. Not to forget those financially strapped that work a few jobs and cannot be home to ensure their children are learning.

At the very least alternate weeks for a class to ensure an education that works with interaction with the classmates, teachers and provides a nice safe setting that many rely on.

    EGO JOE MUST GO!!!

  3. The school system will supply the technology(laptops etc.) you need to use at home. Give them a call.

  4. I feel the same way with 3 children at home and 2 on IEPs. I would like to know what the mayor is going to do now.
