On Wednesday, State Auditor Suzanne M. Bump was presented with the Excellence in Government Leadership Award by the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) at its National Leadership Training in Washington, D.C. In a citation presented to Bump, the AGA cited her use of data and technology to address complex challenges facing government, improvements to child welfare, public benefit programs, and overall government operations as primary reasons for selecting her to receive the award.

“As State Auditor, I’ve led my agency with a core set of principles. I’ve clearly and consistently communicated our agency’s mission and values, ensured staff have a voice in setting goals and performance metrics and provided the resources needed to achieve them, constantly sought opportunities for improvement, and recognized and rewarded success,” Bump said. “This award is a recognition of the important impact of my office and reinforces my commitment to this leadership style.”

Auditor Bump receives the 2020 Excellence in Government Leadership Award from AGA President Ernie Almonte.

“Throughout the year, countless financial management professionals across the country work to improve government performance, accountability, transparency and trust, mostly going unnoticed for their hard work,” said AGA CEO Ann Ebberts. “AGA is proud to recognize the achievements and dedication of these professionals during our annual National Leadership Training event. The National Leadership Awards recognize the best in the field and those who consistently demonstrate the highest personal and professional standards. This year’s recipients are no different.”

The AGA Excellence in Government Leadership award honors a state, local or tribal government professional who exemplifies and promotes excellence in government financial management, outstanding leadership, high ethical standards and innovative management procedures. It recognizes the cumulative achievements of an individual who, throughout their public career, has served as a role model for others and has consistently exhibited the highest personal and professional standards.

In 2013, Bump served at the president of the Boston Chapter of the AGA. In addition, in 2016, her office received the AGA’s Einhorn-Gary Award for its commitment to furthering government accountability; it was the first time the award was given to an entire office, rather than an individual.
