Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Nicholas STILES Jr (ADW, A&B)

The following is a summary of facts pertaining to incident # 17065584:

On Thursday, October 26, 2017, I was assigned marked unit East 4. At approximately 3:23 pm, I was dispatched to the intersection of Broadway and School St for the report of a fight. Officer Canty (East 1) and Officer Nevin (West 5) responded as backup.

On scene, I was met by XXXXX, the victim. I immediately could see that XXXXX was bleeding from the right side of his head. I asked XXXXX if he was alright and he said yes. I asked XXXXX what happened to his head. XXXXX said he was driving west on Broadway when he noticed a white male, later identified as Nick Stiles Jr, punching a heavy set black male repeatedly. XXXXX said he honked the cars horn and yelled out the car window to try and get Stiles to stop. XXXXX said Stiles yelled at him to mind his own business. XXXXX said he pulled his car over and got out to intervene and Stiles started walking towards him telling him to mind his own business. XXXXX said Stiles got in his face yelling obscenities and then punched him.  XXXXX said they began to wrestle and they fell to the ground and he hit his head on the pavement. XXXXX said Stiles kept trying to punch him while they were wrestling on the ground. XXXXX said at one point he saw Stiles reaching for a knife that was laying on the ground. XXXXX said he grabbed both of Stiles arms so he couldn’t grab the knife because he said he thought Stiles was going to stab him. XXXX said a man, later identified as YYYYY, kicked the knife away so Stiles could not reach it. XXXXX said Stiles then got up and ran westbound on Broadway. XXXXX was treated for minor injuries by Cataldo Ambulance EMT’s. I have attached photos of Terry’s injuries.

I asked YYYYY to tell me what he saw. YYYYY said that he and two other males, later identified as ZZZZZ and AAAAA, were standing near the bus stop in front of 333 Broadway. YYYYY said that Stiles was yelling and swearing at cars that drove by. YYYYY said at one point Stiles turned around and got into the face of an unidentified, heavy set, black male sitting on the steps of 333 Broadway. YYYYY said that Stiles “sucker” punched the black male and began to beat him up.  YYYYY said the black male got up and began running east on Broadway towards Temple St. YYYYY said Stiles ran after the black male and caught him on the corner of Langmaid Ave and Broadway and once again began beating him up. YYYYY said that is when XXXXX pulled up and got out of his car to help.  YYYYY said Stiles yelled at XXXXX to mind his own business. YYYYY said Stiles punched XXXXX in the face and the two began to wrestle, eventually falling to the pavement. YYYYY said during the altercation he saw Stiles with a knife in his hand. YYYYY said at one point Stiles must have dropped the knife and when he saw Stiles reaching back for it he kicked it away from Stiles. YYYYY said Stiles then got up and ran westbound on Broadway. I asked YYYYY where the unidentified black male had gone. YYYYY said that when Stiles and XXXXX began fighting, the black male got up and ran towards Temple St and he didn’t see him again.

I asked ZZZZZ what he saw. ZZZZ said he saw Stiles walk over to a black male sitting on the steps of 333 Broadway and punch him in the face. ZZZZZ said the black male tried to run away but Stiles chased him, caught him, and began beating him up. ZZZZZ said XXXXX pulled over in his car and got out telling Stiles to stop. ZZZZZ said Stiles approached XXXXX and punched him in the face. ZZZZZ said both men fell to the pavement and began wrestling. ZZZZZ said he saw Stiles with a knife and at one point he saw YYYYY kick the knife away as Stiles reached for it. ZZZZZ said that Stiles then got up and ran west on Broadway. I asked ZZZZZ if he knew where the black male had gone and he said he ran down Temple St.

I asked AAAAA what he saw. AAAAA said he saw Stiles walk over to a black male sitting on the steps in front of 333 Broadway. AAAAA said Stiles was yelling and swearing at the black male and then Stiles punched the black male in the face. AAAAA said the black male tried to run away from Stiles. AAAAA said Stiles caught the black male after a very short distance and continued to beat him up. AAAAA said XXXXX got out of his car and yelled for Stiles to stop. AAAAA said Stiles told XXXXX to mind his own business. AAAAA said Stiles walked over towards XXXXX yelling and swearing at him and then Stiles punched XXXXX in the face. AAAAA said the two men began to fight and eventually fell to the street. AAAAA said the two men continued to wrestle and at one point AAAAA said he saw Stiles with a knife. AAAAA said he saw YYYYY walk over and kick the knife away from Stiles reach. AAAAA said that Stiles then got up and ran west on Broadway. I asked AAAAA if he knew where the black male had gone. AAAAA said he saw him run towards Temple St. Peter did tell me that he saw a woman, later identified as BBBBBB, filming the incident.

I was able to located BBBBB in the area. I asked BBBBB if she filmed the altercation and she said yes. I asked BBBBB if she would show me the video and she said yes. BBBBB was only able to video the end of the altercation between Stiles and XXXXX. It shows both men on the ground wrestling. At one point in the video you see Stiles reaching for the knife laying on the ground and XXXXX grabbing Stiles arm so he couldn’t grab it. Then you see YYYYY walk over and kick the knife away from Stiles so he couldn’t reach it. BBBBB was not able to send me the video but said she would not erase it and it would be available upon request.

It is important to note that the victim and all the witness’s had described Stiles as a balding, short, white male, wearing a flannel shirt. It was only with the aid of BBBBB’s video that I was able to identify the suspect as Nicholas Stiles Jr, someone with whom I’m very familiar. It is also important to note that the knife involved was a straight edge razor. The razor was secured and logged in to evidence in locker 2.

While still on scene, I saw Stiles walking back down Broadway yelling and screaming “they are all lying, I didn’t do anything”. Officer Canty and Officer Nevin detained Stiles so I could finish interviewing witnesses. Stiles became increasingly agitated, yelling, swearing, and acting in a very tumultuous manner. His constant yelling and screaming caused people to come out of the Winter Hill Bank across the street to see what was going and a large crowd had gathered to watch.

Stiles was placed under arrest and transported back to the station in unit 200 by Officer Van Nostrand where he was booked in the usual manner by Lt. DiGregorio. Stiles is being charged with Assault W/Dangerous Weapon c265 S15B, Assault and Battery c265 S13A, and Disorderly Conduct c272 S53.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Shaun Clark #321

  1. ha yeah who ever starred out the names must have thought it said “saint” peter… when actually it says: “AAAAA said he saw him run towards Temple St. (abbreviation for street) Peter did tell me that he saw…” very sloppy and possibly dangerous for the witness.
