Candidate Profile Guillermo Samuel Hamlin for Ward 1 School Committee

Hello Somerville, my name is Guillermo Hamlin. I’m a proud Ward 1 resident, board member at the Community Action Agency of Somerville, an active member of East Somerville Main Streets, and your candidate for Ward 1 School Committee. I’m running for this open seat because as an involved member of my community, it is clear that children and their families overcome obstacles every day and persevere despite lingering challenges. It is up to us to find solutions to problems that can ease their burden however we can, whenever we can. For the past 5 years, I’ve worked alongside my neighbors in solving problems, keeping families together, and having fun.
Whether it’s: fighting for affordable housing, improving the Recreations Dept. as a Task Force Member, testifying for in-state tuition for undocumented high school students, and recently raising money by participating in a dunk tank at Carnaval. Community involvement aside; our platform wants to expand after-school programming so that students can retain what they learned with classes, games, and/or recreation. We are pushing for a year-long youth jobs program. We hope to highlight and ultimately reduce barriers of income and language for our students.
Our campaign has been knocking doors from Ed Leathers Park down to Symphony Park. Throughout Assembly Row and the States. I’ve reunited with neighbors who’ve I’ve met knocking doors for asking them to vote No on 2, for the New High School with Yes on 5, and when I was the Ward 1 surrogate for Mike Connolly. And on Sept. 19th….I ask for your vote, not to enrich me but to support the parents, extended family, and neighbors who have committed their time, energy, and effort to continue making our public schools a place for all children and all families. I will build on their efforts and the city of Somerville will recognize that when we come together with a new vision that aims to do better for our children, we will win.
Thank you
