Hundreds of residents Joined the Somerville Arts Department this Sunday afternoon on Holland St between Davis and Teele Square for the 2017 Somerville SomerStreets Seize the Summer event.
The event included two stages of music, interactive activities, 90 ft bouncy house/water slide, beer garden from Aeronaut Brewing Company, flea and artisan craft market, and more! Other activities and programming included: Live music on two stages including: Teele Square stage: 2:30 – 3:30pm Parks 3:45 – 4:45pm Dana from CIVIC 5 – 6pm School of HONK Davis Square Stage (sponsored by Somerville Flea): 2 – 3:30pm Melvern Taylor and His Fabulous Meltones 4:15 – 6pm Ship of the Sun Beer garden sponsored Aeronaut Brewing Company Games with Buzzroar interactive – for people of all ages! 3pm – Balloon toss 4pm – water balloon dodge ball 5pm – Old school games including: red light green light and Simon says -A 90 ft obstacle course water slide – open to people of all ages! Bring your bathing suit! -Aerial Arts by Esh Circus Arts -Temporary bike lane – that was open to all – by MassDOT -Hockey, football, preschool games and more with the Somerville Recreation Department -Flea and artisan craft market by Somerville Flea -Storytelling project with Somerville Media Center and the City of Somerville – tell your story about Somerville to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Somerville -Martial arts performance and demonstration class with Villari martial arts -Face painting & henna painting -Explore a fire truck and ambulance -Community vendors and local businesses AND more! SomerStreets is the City of Somerville’s take on the internationally-renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles, and opening them up for cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other modes of activity. Through SomerStreets, the City and its community partners aim to promote and encourage easy access to physical activity, and reconnecting with neighborhoods and businesses and their unique cultural elements in a thriving urban environment.
SomerStreets builds on the Shape Up Somerville healthy living initiative. Similar open streets events take place all around the world, providing space normally taken up by automobile traffic for people to be more active. SomerStreets is an annual series that takes place one Sunday per month June through October. The 2017 events schedule is as follows: Sunday, June 4: SomerStreets Carnaval, Lower Broadway, East Somerville (McGrath Hwy to Pennsylvania Ave) Rain Date: June 11 Sunday, August 6: SomerStreets Seize the Summer, Holland St. (Davis Sq. to Teele Sq.)
