Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Ronie DEOLIVEIRA (Unlicensed Operation of MV & Wellesley/Framingham Warrants

On 02/24/2017, I Officer Joseph S. Teves was working in full uniform assigned to the Somerville Police Dept. traffic unit. I was performing selective traffic enforcement at the intersection of Washington Street and Webster Ave. I would like to note that both of these roads are public ways in the city of Somerville. While I was at my traffic post I observed a van travel from Somerville Ave straight onto Webster Ave. from the right turn only lane. This vehicle was also operating without headlights at the time of the motor vehicle infraction. I stepped into the roadway and signaled for the operator to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road. Once the vehicle was stopped I approached the operator who would be identified as Ronie DeOliveira.

I asked Mr. DeOliveira for his driver’s license along with the registration for the vehicle he was operating. Mr. DeOliveira stated that he did not have a driver’s license and that he was from Brazil and has been driving on his passport. I asked Mr. DeOliveira for his passport. Mr. DeOliveira was unable to produce the requested document and stated that he left it at home. I asked Mr. DeOliveira how long he had been in the country for . Mr. DeOliveira stated over a year. At this point I had Mr. DeOliveira write down his name and date of birth on my notepad. Once I had the information I returned to my cruiser and ran the information through my mobile data terminal. During my investigation it was discovered that Mr. DeOliveira had multiple default warrants in the system. I radioed to Somerville Dispatch and had them confirm the warrants. While I was waiting for a response Officer McCarey arrived at my location to assist, along with Detective Nadile. Once I received confirmation on the Warrants I requested that the mobile detention unit (#200) be sent to my location.

I placed Mr. DeOliveira into handcuffs and double locked them in accordance with my training, and explained to Mr. DeOliveira that he was being taken into custody for the warrants. I also informed Mr. DeOliveira that I would be filing additional charges for operating a motor vehicle without a license. Once Unit 200 arrived at my location Mr. DeOliveira was placed inside and transported back to the police station where he was booked by Lt. Rymill . I placed Massachusetts Uniform Criminal citation R8324144 in Mr. DeOliveira property after the booking process was complete.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Joseph S. Teves # 297

Somerville Police Dept.
