What’s New in Ward 2:Staying Informed in the Snow with Maryann Heuston

Flood Forum – The Snow Has To Melt Sometime!
This topic needs continued vigilance and I will make sure it says a Board of Alderman priority. Flooding is a historic problem that is getting worse and it seriously impacts the quality of life in many of our neighborhoods.
With the Green Line Extension and Union Square redevelopment we are at a critical but opportune moment to tackle flooding, let’s not waste it. All the work we are doing for the future of Somerville will be for naught if we don’t commit to resolve our basic issues.

Flood Forum Committee
February 25, at 6 p.m. in City Hall
I have seen too many green spaces paved over and too many new developments abuse our landscape. I am working to strengthen the ordinances that govern the amount of pervious surface in the city. There is no doubt that the increase of impervious surface in Somerville has contributed to our flooding problem. Now is the time to take action.

Union Square Updates
Union Square Traffic Study
I have requested a presentation on the findings and recommendations of the ongoing Parsons Brinckerhoff Union Square Traffic and Infrastructure study. Recommended changes to Union Square’s traffic patterns may be tested soon. It’s important that the community be made aware of those changes well in advance.

Sustainable Neighborhoods/affordable housing
I have been invited to sit on the Sustainable Housing Task Force. Affordability is one of the major challenges we face as Union Square and the rest of Somerville developments. This is a great opportunity and I’m looking forward to the work the task force will do. I’m happy to have a seat at the table!

And please consider joining the Union Square Civic Advisory Committee!
The Civic Advisory Committee will work along side the Union Square Master Developer giving feedback and community insight. It’s important that community around Union Square has a strong voice in the development. If you are interested in joining send a letter of intent that includes relevant skills, your resume, and contact information to Amanda Maher (amaher@somervillema.gov).

Lincoln Park Redesign
February 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the Argenziano School
Yes! Weston & Sampson, a local landscape architect and environmental engineering group, has been chosen to design the park. Check out this meeting to help start the planning and design for Lincoln Park.

Mothers Out Front
March 1, at 2 p.m. – 34 Josephine Ave.
Mothers Out Front is a terrific group of mothers and grandmothers that care about climate change and preserving our planet for our children and our children’s children. Come to this meeting to learn more about Mothers Out Front, hear local climate experts talk about climate change, and what we can be doing about it.
