This past Thursday, January 1st New Years Day, Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone and the City of Somerville hosted the 239th Flag Raising at Prospect Hill.
The festivities began at Somerville City Hall at 11:30 a.m. where residents and elected officials dressed in American Revolutionary attire met for the procession to Prospect Hill with a program that started at Noon.
The spectators learned about the important role that our city played in the American Revolution.
Patriotic songs and American Revolutionary attire set the surroundings while guest enjoyed light refreshments on Prospect Hill.
Elected officials, local youth to seniors came out in frigid temperatures wearing tri-corner hats and Colonial clothing to make this celebration of Somerville’s history more authentic.
George Washington riding horseback with the assistance of the Somerville Fire Department helped with the reenactment of the first flag raising on the tower.
