Det. Sgt. Scott Whalen
Detective Sergeant Scott Whalen has been a member of the Somerville Police Department for the last 13 years. Sergeant Whalen has attended countless specialized training programs to develop his skills in the area of forensic investigations. During a recent investigation against a women who allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a minor child, Sgt. Whalen performed various searches of numerous electronic devices including the victim’s cell phones and IPAD, as well as the suspect’s cell phone, work computer, IPAD, and personal lap top. These searches yielded enough incriminating information to establish probable cause to search the defendant’s home, vehicle, and other electronic devices which yielded a far greater quantity and quality of evidence. Computer forensics is a difficult area to learn and develop as a skill. It was only through Sergeant Whalen’s training, experience, and ability to conduct these searches so quickly, efficiently, and accurately that so much evidence was obtained and that this woman was indicted. Sergeant Whalen’s dedication to his work is cause for recognition of the Beyond the Call of Duty award for the month of August 2014.
