
Work begins Friday, January 24
BOSTON/SOMERVILLE – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing traffic pattern shifts on Maffa Way and Mystic Avenue in Somerville that will be implemented beginning Friday, January 24. These shifts are anticipated to remain in place through January of 2026.
On Maffa Way, two lanes of traffic will be temporarily shifted from the southbound side of the bridge to the northbound side. One lane from Broadway in Somerville and one lane from the I-93 ramp will be maintained. Pedestrian access will be maintained across the bridge. Additionally, segments of Caldwell and Brighton Streets will be closed where they intersect with Broadway Street on the westbound side of the bridge.
On Mystic Avenue, two lanes of traffic will be temporarily shifted from the northbound side of the bridge to the southbound side. The end of Sherman Street will be closed for this work zone.
Detours will be in place as follows:
Brighton Street at Broadway Closure
- Vehicles traveling from Caldwell Street to Broadway should turn right on Brighton Street, right on Perkins Street, and right on Mount Vernon Street.
- Vehicles traveling from Broadway to Brighton Street should turn onto Mount Pleasant Street, then turn left onto Perkins Street.
- A temporary parking ban on the north side of Perkins Street between Mount Pleasant Street and Caldwell Street will be in place to allow for two-way travel.
- Pedestrians will be directed to use Caldwell Street, Perkins Street, and Mount Pleasant Street.
Sherman Street at Mystic Avenue Closure
- Vehicles traveling from Mystic Avenue to Sherman Street will be directed to turn right on Dorrance Street and left on Arlington Avenue.
- Vehicles traveling from Sherman Street to Mystic Avenue will be directed to head northbound on Sherman Street, turn right on Arlington Avenue, and turn right on Dorrance Street.
Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.
Appropriate signage and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work areas.
