The good news: After decades of advocacy, the Green Line Extension is finally coming to Somerville! Once it’s complete, 85% of Somerville residents will live within half a mile of a train stop and will have expanded transit options.
The not so great news: To complete the work needed to bring in the Green Line there will be a series of bridge closures starting in 2019. That’s going to make getting around Somerville tough, but we’re working with MassDOT and the GLX team to minimize the pain.
Here’s a quick rundown of the upcoming closures:
March 22, 2019 – March 2020: For roughly one year, the Broadway Bridge (between Ball Square and Magoun Square) will be closed and detours will in place for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
April 2019 – Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 to Fall 2020: For two 7-8 month periods, the Washington St. underpass (near McGrath Highway) will be closed and there will be detours for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
July 2019 – Spring 2020: For roughly 8-9 months, the Medford St. Bridge (behind Somerville High School) will be closed and vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists will be detoured.
